Were Abu Ghraib abuses learned from Israel?

Palestinians who have spent time in Israeli detention say the images of sexual abuse and humiliation from Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison are painful reminders of their own experience at the hands of Israeli interrogators.
More News

Some, like Hisham Abdel Razzaq, the Palestinian minister for prisoners, believe the similarity is more than coincidental.

"I am inclined to think that the Americans copied the Israeli techniques, " said Abdel Razzaq. "I can't prove it in an objective manner, but the striking similarities are overwhelming."

To increase international pressure for Pres. Obama to call on Israel to end its blockade of war-torn Gaza, just days before Obama delivers his first speech from the Arab world here, TOMORROW a 66-person, largely American delegation will attempt to cross through the heavily policed, blockaded Egyptian city of Rafah into Gaza.

The delegation, which will bring toys and playground building materials for Gazan children, will also collect signatures for an international petition calling on Obama to visit Gaza during his upcoming Middle East tour so he can witness the damage himself. The delegation will deliver to the U.S. Embassy in Cairo by June 4 in time for his historic speech.

Transcript of Richard Gage explaining controlled demolition on KMPH in Fresno

Is the dam beginning to break?

In this seven minute interview, Richard Gage, an architect for 20 years, is given plenty of time to explain the overwhelming evidence that the World Trade Center buildings were not brought down by the impact of the planes and ordinary office fires. Unlike the derision and condescension that typically greets 9/11 truth activists at mainstream outlets, these two anchors seem genuinely curious and open to the uncomfortable facts proving that explosives were detonated inside the Twin Towers.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Now, before everyone gets excited, remember that this is a FOX News Affiliate, so this broadcast was show only in Fresno, not nation-wide, and from the clock on screen, at 8:41 in the morning when viewership is very low.

This may be a "bone" tossed by FOX to the truth movement so that FOX can now claim to have covered 9-11 honestly and fairly in case things really unwrap down the road.

Mr. Abbas goes to Washington.

"Obama has told Netanyahu firmly that Israel must stop building settlements on expropriated Palestinian land in the West Bank, but such words have been uttered by the president's predecessors. Unless these statements are followed by decisive action -- perhaps to limit American subsidies to Israel -- there's no reason to believe the lip service that failed in the past will suddenly be more effective.

On the Palestinian side, Obama is talking to the wrong man: more than half of residents in the Occupied Palestinian Territories do not consider Abbas the "legitimate" president of the Palestinians, according to a March survey by Fafo, a Norwegian research organization. Eighty-seven percent want the Fatah faction, which Abbas heads, to have new leaders.

Time for Transparency at Der Spiegel?

Syria was accused in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri of being the ‘real’ assassins. A massive international anti-Syria campaign was launched by the Bush Administration and Israel to demonize its government.

But things have changed. This weekend, a new exclusive, secret, investigative report showing the real assassins was published by the same weekly, Der Spiegel. Same author. Same editor. New target.

This time Der Spiegel’s Erich Follath claimed solo that the international committee investigating the assassination of former Prime Minister martyr Rafik Hariri has reached “surprising new secret conclusions”, this time pointing to Hezbollah.

U.S. Weighs Single Agency to Regulate Banking Industry

Senior administration officials are considering the creation of a single agency to regulate the banking industry, replacing a patchwork of agencies that failed to prevent banks from falling into the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, sources said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

That is NOT what happened.

Congress, yes, CONGRESS repealed the Glass Steagall act in 1999. This was a law passed in the wake of the great depression to prevent banks and brokerage companies from entering each others' businesses, which created a situation which encouraged runaway speculation.

So it does not matter what new agency is created, because somewhere down the road the bankers will lobby Congress to let loose the chains again and create the same situation all over again.

The only real fix is to close the Federal Reserve and return control of the money supply to the US Treasury Department.

Jose E. Concepcion, aka Mylow magnet motor a hoax

LightRider's analysis of the rotation speeds shows that the only time the devices show acceleration is when not all the device is shown, allowing for some kind of external assist to take place (e.g. a quiet, battery-powered Dremel tool). When the entire motor is in view, invariably the motor is decelerating as you would expect if there were no magic taking place in the magnets.

The most blatant demonstration of this is in the March 22 video. The motor accelerates except when it is in full view, at which time it very clearly slows down.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Dozens of people (whose email addresses I had never seen before) sent me the original videos of this "amazing" motor and insisted that I "simply MUST" post this on my website. I declined, for reasons having to do with my science background, and in turn received quite a bit of email abuse from these operatives clearly intending to force this obvious hoax onto my website.

FLASHBACK: The Pentagon's Secret Stash Why we'll never see the second round of Abu Ghraib photos.

The images, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress, depict "acts that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel, and inhuman." After Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) viewed some of them in a classified briefing, he testified that his "stomach gave out." NBC News reported that they show "American soldiers beating one prisoner almost to death, apparently raping a female prisoner, acting inappropriately with a dead body, and taping Iraqi guards raping young boys." Everyone who saw the photographs and videos seemed to shudder openly when contemplating what the reaction would be when they eventually were made public.

Fake Rape Photos Re-Emerge Again To Discredit Real Torture Scandal

Staged photos lifted from porn websites purporting to be images of U.S. troops raping female detainees at Abu Ghraib are again circulating at the height of the torture scandal, discrediting the very real and admitted accounts of rape described in Major General Antonio Taguba’s military report into the Abu Ghraib prison.

Despite the fact that these photos were vehemently discredited and proven to be taken from porn websites when they first emerged in 2004, they are again being erroneously cited as examples of photos showing rape that the Obama administration is blocking from public release - providing debunkers with ammunition to dismiss the validity of the torture scandal altogether.

Have We Turned Into Sheep?

Although people joke about France’s laid back, c’est la vie attitude, let’s give French workers credit for knowing how to respond to an outrage. When corporations try to tell French workers they’re going to slash their health care benefits or mess with their pensions, the workers behave the way people should behave when the wealthy and powerful try to snow them. They go totally ape-shit.

Unlike us Americans, who don’t run into the streets unless our houses are on fire or a professional sports team has won a championship, when the French face economic catastrophe, they have, historically, taken to the barricades like fiends; they block traffic, burn cars, and generally raise hell. Win or lose, they show the authorities how seriously they value their standard of living.

An innocent man, Leonard Peltier was wrongfully convicted in 1977 and has served over 30 years in federal prison despite proof of his innocence—also despite proof that he was convicted on the basis of fabricated and suppressed evidence, as well as coerced testimony.

The United States Courts of Appeal have repeatedly acknowledged investigative and prosecutorial misconduct in this case but, by their decisions, have refused to take corrective action. A model prisoner, Leonard also has been denied fair consideration for parole and Executive Clemency. This is clearly an abuse of the legal standards of American justice.

Torture And Truth

Throughout, Obama has expressed a desire to concentrate on the "future" rather than the "past." As he put it a while back, he is bent on "getting things right in the future, as opposed [to] looking at what we got wrong in the past." Or as he said in the National Archives speech, "We need to focus on the future" while resisting those "with a strong desire to focus on the past."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Would that argument have played at Nuremberg? Can you quite down the Holocaust industry by saying we should look to the future and not focus on the past? After all, whatever happened in WWW2 happened in the first half of the previous century, but what happened in Abu Ghraib is still current events; the memory fresh, the victims and perpetrators still very much alive.

Are the war crimes committed by the United States somehow less important than the war crimes committed by the Nazis?

President Obama has completed the transition of the United States to a dictatorship, because when a leader holds himself or herself above the law, and is in turn held to be above the law by the mechanism of government, then the rule of law has failed and we suffer the rule of powerful individuals; people who do anything to achieve power and afterward feel free to do anything with it.

This torture scandal is never going to go away until the crimes are prosecuted and the criminals punished. Only then will it fade into history. And until Obama carries out his oath of office and defends the Constitution from its obvious domestic enemies, then he has lost all credibility.

Bush exceeded his office. Obama has yet to step into it.

WHO'S THE TERRORIST? It might be you!

Walking around downtown Ottawa, I often see the words, "You might be a terrorist" stenciled on newspaper boxes. It makes me smile sometimes, and other times it makes me feel sad because those few words tell a dangerous story for us all.

Who is a terrorist and who is not is more and more becoming a political rather than a factual decision. Sooner or later Canadians will have to awake to the fact that if President Bush can exploit the constantly reinforced fear of terrorism to arbitrarily establish "Executive Orders" that override the American Constitution, it is only a matter of time before it happens here.

What am I saying? It has already happened here. The Security Certificate is in direct contravention of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Like the Soviet Union of old that we used to love to sneer at, Canada has secret police who can nab anybody they wish by manufacturing evidence and then invoking "National Security" when asked to reveal it.

Do Americans Have a Moral Conscience?

Torture is a violation of US and international law. Yet, president George W. Bush and vice president Dick Cheney, on the basis of legally incompetent memos prepared by Justice Department officials, gave the OK to interrogators to violate US and international law.

The new Obama administration shows no inclination to uphold the rule of law by prosecuting those who abused their offices and broke the law.

Cheney claims, absurdly, that torture was necessary in order to save American cities from nuclear weapons in the hands of terrorists. Many Americans have bought the argument that torture is morally justified in order to make terrorists reveal where ticking nuclear bombs are before they explode.

Torture photos do show rape, Pentagon/Obama denials notwithstanding

The Daily Beast has confirmed that the photographs of abuses at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison which President Obama, in a reversal, decided not to release, depict sexually explicit acts, including a uniformed soldier receiving oral sex from a female prisoner, a government contractor engaged in an act of sodomy with a male prisoner and scenes of forced masturbation, forced exhibition and penetration involving phosphorous sticks and brooms.

As Israel continues to proclaim its readiness to launch a military attack on Iran should American diplomacy fail to stop Tehran’s drive for nuclear capabilities, an increasing number of analysts and some political leaders are publicly questioning Jerusalem’s confident portrayal of its chance for military success.

Their conclusion: Chances of a strong success — defined by how much of Iran’s uranium enrichment program is destroyed or the number of years the attack delays Iran’s acquisition of material sufficient to build a nuclear bomb — seem dubious, while the risks of the undertaking and its harsh military and destabilizing geopolitical consequences seem overwhelming.

CSIS: Nothing but trouble and shame

This is exactly why Secret Trials should be abolished and why judges should long ago have refused to get involved in them. The Judges who have disbelieved Harkat in favour of what CSIS tells them behind closed doors have willingly buried their heads in muck, while many of us have watched the dirty dealings of CSIS for years and wouldn't trust them if they were the last source of information on earth.

The collaboration between the Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) and CSIS is obvious. The brutal raid they carried out recently on the Harkat's home and privacy was a desperate attempt to find something, anything, that might save CSIS from the inevitable wages of their sins!

How many times does CSIS have to be caught in lies and cover-ups before they are disbanded as more trouble and shame than they're worth? At least the RCMP bring in some tourist revenue. What has CSIS done for Canada other than scrabble under rocks and maintain the myth of Al Qaeda for the benefit of US wars of hegemony? The Secret Trials have cost the taxpayers a mint and years of agony for the accused and their families.

MoD admits use of controversial 'enhanced blast' weapons in Afghanistan

British pilots in Afghanistan are firing an increasing number of "enhanced blast" thermobaric weapons, designed to kill everyone in buildings they strike, the Ministry of Defence has revealed.

Its wider use was disclosed by John Hutton, the defence secretary, in answer to a parliamentary answer from Nick Harvey, the Liberal Democrat defence spokesman. "Given the MoD's reluctance to admit they were even going to use these weapons, they now seem to be getting rather more trigger-happy," Harvey said yesterday. "If these controversial weapons are being fired on a weekly basis in Afghanistan, we need to know that they are being used according to strict rules of engagement."

Webmaster's Commentary:

The most probably reality is that these weapons are being used indiscriminately, killing all - including women, kids, and the medically infirm - in their wake.

Guns are up in D.C., violence is down

Writing in the Washington Post in March, Nickles bragged about cracking down on gun violations. This, he said, led to a 5 percent decrease in violence in the city.

Which is nice, but the city still needs to answer the question: Instead of giving security guards and little old ladies a tough time in seeking a gun legally, why was the city not going after the gangs all along?

The failure of urban gun laws to reduce violence is based on holding inanimate objects - guns - responsible for the actions of criminals.

Criminals are cowards. They go after easy prey. This is why they target the poor, and not the rich.

Criminals also target the unarmed, which is why Washington, D.C., was a "gangsta paradise," to quote an old rap song.

Louisiana Senate bans smoking in bars, casinos

A proposal that would ban smoking in bars and gambling facilities passed the Louisiana Senate on Thursday and is headed to the House.

The state already has a law that prohibits smoking in restaurants, public places, public buildings and most places of employment. The proposal by Sen. Rob Marionneaux, D-Livonia, would require bars, casinos, off-track betting facilities and other gambling spots also to become smoke-free.

The 22-10 vote by the Senate sent the bill to the House, where a similar bill by Rep. Gary Smith, D-Norco, awaits full House debate.

All that is omitted are the reasons for these threats, that is, the actions of the United States and South Korea to which North Korea is responding.

What threats has Pelosi relayed to China about N. Korea?

Pelosi to push China over North Korea talks
By Ian Swanson
Posted: 05/25/09 06:41 PM [ET]
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi later this week will press China¹s leaders to use their influence to bring North Korea back to negotiations on its nuclear program.
Pelosi (D-Calif.) said her delegation had always planned to press the Chinese on the issue, but North Korea¹s announcement Monday that it had successfully completed a nuclear test made the need more urgent.
"These reported tests underscore the message our congressional delegation planned to deliver to top Chinese government leaders during our meetings later this week: the Chinese must use their influence to help bring North Korea to the table for the Six-Party talks," Pelosi said in the statement.

Hammad Abdallah was taken to a local hospital where he received 10 stitches for a head wound and treatment for chest injuries.

IRS tax revenue falls along with taxpayers' income

For example, 6 million people lost jobs in the 12 months ended in April — and that means far fewer dollars from income taxes. Income tax revenue dropped 44% from a year ago.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The numbers do not work out. 6 million lost jobs do not account for a 44% decline in tax revenues. a 44% decline in tax revenues roughly equates to ALL working Americans having lost almost half of their earning ability.

As I mentioned before, the official unemployment figures do not tell the whole story. People who have lost high-paying jobs and been forced to take lower-paying jobs are still counted as employed, yet as the 44% reduction in tax revenues indicates, this is a significant loss of earning ability.

A 44% decline in tax revenues means that Americans are now earning 44% less money, thanks to a misguided tax policy that encouraged corporations to send high-paying American jobs to other countries.

Murder charge for store employee who shot robbery suspect

D.A. David Prater has charged Jerome Ersland with murder for the shooting at the reliable Pharmacy last Tuesday.

Prater says that shooting was justified, but Ersland allegedly shot Parker five more times in the abdomen.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is absurd. The DA admits the shooting was justified as self-defense, but wants to charge the guy with murder because he pulled the trigger too many times?

I have been there; when you get attacked adrenaline flows and you go into survival mode. Guys who are on Angel Dust can and do get right back up after being shot just once. Emptying the clip is a reasonable thing to do under the circumstances. Most of the comments seem to agree with this.

“The testimonies conveyed an atmosphere in which one feels entitled to use unrestricted force against Palestinians,” academy director Dany Zamir told Israel public radio.

“The climate in general…I don’t know how to describe it…. the lives of Palestinians, let’s say, are much, much less important than the lives of our soldiers,” an infantry squad leader is quoted as saying in the testimonies.

In another cited case, a commander ordered his troops to kill an elderly female civilian walking on a road, even though she was easily identifiable and clearly posed no immediate threat to the soldiers.
