Roberts vows to ‘shut down the Senate’ if Obama empties Gitmo

Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) on Friday vowed to block all legislation in the Senate with a prolonged filibuster if President Obama tries to transfer detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the United States.

A day after Tea Party hero Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) campaigned with him in Wichita, Roberts threatened to wage a marathon talk session similar to the one Cruz held last year to protest the implementation of ObamaCare.

“I stopped him once from trying to send a Gitmo terrorist to Leavenworth. I shall do it again, I shall do it again and if he tries it again I will shut down the Senate,” Roberts said, referring to the military prison located sixty miles east of his campaign headquarters in Topeka where he spoke to campaign volunteers.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Here's the deal.

As reported at defenseone.com in June of this year:

Here are the facts about the status of the detainees at Gitmo. The administration has already cleared 78 of the 149 remaining prisoners for transfer. Having never been charged with a crime, these detainees have since been deemed to pose no national security threat by defense and intelligence officials and could be set for departure at any time.

So over what precisely does Senator Roberts have his knickers in a twist about?!?

IS it perhaps that water-boarding is not the worst thing that was done to them to get them to confess, in the very midieval US-created, or sponsored torture?!?

Is it perhaps that moral questions would be asked, about why the Bush administration encouraged torture, when it has been known, since the Catholic Inquisition, that torture only gets the tortured person to say just what his torturer wants to hear to get the torture to stop?!?

In a report from thinkprogress.org,dated 9 February, 2009, the following was reported to have been done to Binyam Mohamed, a British resident:

Source: Think Progress Gitmo Detainee’s ‘Genitals Were Sliced With A Scalpel,’ Waterboarding ‘Far Down The List Of Things They Did’ Last week, two British High Court judges ruled against releasing documents describing the treatment of Binyam Mohamed, a British resident who is currently being held at Guantanamo Bay. The judges said the Bush administration “had threatened to withhold intelligence cooperation with Britain if the information were made public.” But The Daily Telegraph reported over the weekend that the documents actually “contained details of how British intelligence officers supplied information to (Mohamed’s) captors and contributed questions while he was brutally tortured.” In fact, it was British officials, not the Americans, who pressured Foreign Secretary David Miliband “to do nothing that would leave serving MI6 officers open to prosecution.” According to the Telegraph’s sources, the documents describe particularly gruesome interrogation tactics: The 25 lines edited out of the court papers contained details of how Mr Mohamed’s genitals were sliced with a scalpel and other torture methods so extreme that waterboarding, the controversial technique of simulated drowning, “is very far down the list of things they did,” the official said. Another source familiar with the case said: “British intelligence officers knew about the torture and didn’t do anything about it.”

I would really like to press Senator Roberts about how justified he beleived this treatment was of this man, and if he would be willing to undergo such a procedure to see for himself just how it feels.

The use of torture by the US government (or outsourced to another government) does two things.

First, it lets the world know that those values US politicians love to publicly embrace, like justice, human rights, and democracy, are not observed here in the slightest, when it comes to prisoners of war.

Secondly, it gives carte blanch to those countries which do not very much like the US to torture both US civilians and our millitary.

Those with family and friends in the military, please chew on that last one for awhile.

CIA didn't know it had Senate 'torture' report

It's a report that's been the talk of Washington's intelligence community for months, yet lawyers for the nation's premier intelligence agency — the CIA — improbably maintained it didn't have a copy.

That claim evaporated Tuesday as a Justice Department lawyer said the government was wrong when it told a federal judge that the Central Intelligence Agency did not have a copy of the unabridged version of a Senate committee report on treatment of detainees. In fact, the CIA does have a copy of the 6,300-page report, DOJ attorney Vesper Mei said.

"There was a miscommunication over at the agency as to what we were looking for," Mei told U.S. District Court Judge James Boasberg at a court session Tuesday. "They didn't realize that they had it."

Webmaster's Commentary:

"MISCOMMUNICATION", MY ASTROLABE!!!

The CIA doesn't want the taxpaying American public to know how horrifically they tortured - or outsourced torture - on American held prisoners of war.

And this is precisely the reason we should know.

Judge orders release of Guantanamo videotapes

A federal judge on Friday ordered the public release of 28 videotapes of a hunger-striking Guantanamo Bay prisoner strike being forcibly removed from his cell and force-fed.

Lawyers for the prisoner, Abu Wa'el Dhiab, have challenged his treatment as abusive.

Numerous news media outlets, including The Associated Press, had asked the court on June 20 to unseal the videotapes, which are classified "secret."

‘Obama to be remembered as someone who betrayed his supporters’

President Obama has turned out to be another failed big government president, who put America into a new war, spied on its own citizens, and made a disastrous health care reform, Executive Director of the Libertarian Party Carla Howell told RT.

RT: The US strikes on ISIS have already cost it around $780-930 million, which is not pleasant news for the American taxpayers but makes a profit for the industries involved. Does President Obama even know about discontent among his citizens?

Carla Howell: I’m sure he is fully informed; he has got an enormous staff to keep him informed of what is going on. Clearly, what he is trying to do is take credit for ending the war in Iraq, and yet at the same time he is beholden to the military industrial complex in America, their special interests, that want more military funding regardless of whether our Generals even want it or not. So he is trying to walk that line.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This President has been an epic fail on everything in which he has intervened.

On immigration; wars in the Middle East; Obamacare; Ebolagate; IRSgate, APgate, and NSAgate, he continues to to undercut working Americans, and makes life worse for most American people.

But you have to understand that such behaviour is completely predictable for a man beholden to the large corporations (including the banks) which have funded the election cycles in which he was (allegedly) elected and re-elected.

Large corporations love illegal immigration, because it cuts the cost of doing business; large corporations love wars, because wars mean profit, for so many companies; and large pharmaceutical corporations love illness, because treatments - rather than cures - are far more profitable.

His faux populism is just an act, and not a terribly convincing act at that; no more, no less.

At the end of the day, this man is a slave to all those who put him in power for one reason, and one reason only; profit.

And he has, and continues, to deliver that for them.

Netanyahu: Postpone Probe Into Attacks on UN Facilities in Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu got into a heated argument with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday night, according to Israeli officials, over the planned UN investigation into Israel attacking UN sites in the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu had demanded Ban postpone the probe into the attacks indefinitely, pending Israel releasing its own inquiry results. He also accused Ban of “discriminating” against Israel by wanting to probe the attacks on UN sites full of civilians at all.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A memo to Ban Ki-Moon: don't listen to this bully.

Do these investigations, and do them NOW.

The shelling of schools and hospitals, and the murder of innocent women and children, where GPS coordinates were given to the IDF to protect those sheltering there from harm, is a war crime, period, end of discussion, and the IDF and the Israeli government should be held legally responsible.

U.S. judge signals he may order more Abu Ghraib photos released

A federal judge signaled on Wednesday he may order the U.S. government to release as many as 2,000 photographs depicting the alleged harsh treatment of detainees in U.S. custody at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and other sites.

U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in New York ruled the U.S. Department of Defense had failed to show why releasing the photographs would endanger the lives of American soldiers and workers abroad.

US wants Guantanamo force-feeding hearing to stay secret

Attorneys for the United States government say that an upcoming court hearing concerning the force-feeding practices used on a Guantanamo Bay detainee should be held almost entirely behind closed doors.

The motion, filed by US attorneys on Friday in District Court for the District of Columbia, asks that the preliminary injunction hearing for Gitmo detainee Abu Wa’el Dhiab scheduled for early next month be conducted largely in secret over supposed national security concerns.

“As an initial matter, the hearing should be closed in order to prevent any unauthorized disclosure of classified or protected information,” the motion reads in part. “Furthermore, the hearing should be closed because, although portions of the materials in the record in this case are unclassified, conducting an open hearing in this case would impose significant burdens on the parties and the Court.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

There are NO valid "national security concerns" only "deep embarrassment concerns."

Anyone whose doctor has prescribed this process in their convalescence from an illness understands that even in the most competent and compassionate hands, it is still uncomfortable as hell.

To use this as a punishment for a hunger strike (as it has been primarily practiced at Gitmo, in a restraint chair) is both immoral and inhumane.

I would very strongly suggest that this is being done to prevent these hunger strikers from dying to prevent autopsies being leaked, which may well show the extent to which these men had been tortured in order to get them to confess to whatever their torturers wanted to hear.

US criticizes Abbas' speech at UN General Assembly

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement on Friday that Mahmud Abbas’ speech, in which he said Israel conducted a “war of genocide” in Gaza, was “offensive”.

Israel unleashed aerial attacks on Gaza in early July and later expanded its military campaign with a ground invasion into the Palestinian territory. Over 2,130 Palestinians lost their lives and some 11,000 were injured.

"Abbas' speech today included offensive characterizations that were deeply disappointing and which we reject," read the statement.

Report: U.S. Air Strike in Syria Kills Six Children, Zero ISIS Members

According to a report by Al-Jazeera, which is aligned with Qatar, a vehement supporter of the U.S. military campaign against ISIS, missiles targeting the town of Kafr Diryan destroyed two residential areas, killing 27 people, most of whom were civilians.

“The locals say that this is the first time that they were attacked by missiles since the outbreak of Syrian revolution. The paradox, they say, is they were bombed not by the Syrian regime, but by an international coalition which killed and wounded many of them under the pretext of fighting terrorism,” states the report.

One of the locals interviewed for the report asserted that no ISIS militants were even active in the area.

CIA Committed 'War Crimes,' Bush Official Says

A top adviser to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned the Bush administration that its use of “cruel, inhuman or degrading” interrogation techniques like waterboarding were “a felony war crime.”

What’s more, newly obtained documents reveal that State Department counselor Philip Zelikow told the Bush team in 2006 that using the controversial interrogation techniques were “prohibited” under U.S. law — “even if there is a compelling state interest asserted to justify them.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US Federal Government will never have to demonstrate one shred of moral conscience again in its existence, thanks for the "unholy trinity" of Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld who defiled some the highest offices in this country with their justification of the use of torture, and their worship at the altar of corporate gain above all else.

And of course, President Obama, who is cut from precisely the same sociopathic cloth as are these men, declared that we, as a nation, had to look "forward, not backward" and away from the ruinous damage they had inflicted, not only to countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, but also, to the moral fiber of this country.

After his inauguration, Obama became not only the country's Commander in Chief, but also assumed the position of a new kind of commander, the "Enabler in Chief", soothingly assuring US citizens that "everything was quite all right, and there was nothing to really worry about" concerning the crimes perpetrated under Bush's watch.

Unfortunately, on this issue, President Obama has been utterly, shamefully, and deeply morally wrong.

The reality that there have been no prosecutions of any of the members of the Bush administration for torture and crimes against humanity, demonstrates, clearly, that we are no longer a nation of laws, but a nation of "national postures" to be justified and rationalized, whenever convenient, no matter the cost to our deeply-enshrined and respectful understanding of American justice and due process.

So welcome, my friends, to a Post-Constitutional Republic; where those freedoms and guarantees which used to be secured by the Constitution and Bill of Rights no longer exist; where indefinite detention without due process, and extrajudicial assassinations of American citizens, and yes - even torture - have been institutionalized and "sanitized" - for our alleged protection.

There now: doesn't that make you feel more safe already?!?

FLASHBACK - WACO - Who Shot First?

Contrary to the image of a dangerous gun nut put out in the media in an effort to justify the burning of the church, official BATF records prove that David Koresch was rather harmless, so much so that the BATF agents invited him to go shooting with them just 9 days before they raided the church. Koresch supplied the ammunition. The BATF agents allowed Koresch to try out their weapons.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US Government justifies interventions in countries like Syria with the claim "They are murdering innocent people." Yet the US Government does not have a blemish-free history, having tried to stage a publicity-seeking raid then when that turned into a PR disaster, gassing a church full of innocent women and children to death with a poison gas that is illegal to use on enemy troops, then tried to cover it up by claiming mass suicide, then bulldozing the remains and burying the remains in a secret location. Thus, the US Government lacks the moral right to point fingers at anyone.

Man Who Was Waterboarded 183 Times, Confesses Complete Responsibility for 9/11 and Will Be Executed.

It was reported on BBC News tonight that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others will be charged with orchestrating the September 11 attacks.

What the report omitted to say was that many sources, including the New York Times (could any institution be less anti-establishment?), reported in April 2009 that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed had been waterboarded 183 times in Guantanano Bay.

The BBC report went on to say, rather comically in the circumstances, was that "Khalid Sheikh Mohammed admits everything relating to the 9/11 attacks from A to Z."

I like to think that this blog specialises in stating the obvious but here is something SO obvious that it does not need stating.

How long will we and our useless, zombified representatives continue to put up with this stuff?

"Guidebook to False Confessions": Key Document John Yoo Used to Draft Torture Memo Released

Air Force Col. Steven Kleinman, a career military intelligence officer recognized as one of the DOD's most effective interrogators as well a former SERE instructor and director of intelligence for JPRA's teaching academy, said he immediately knew the true value of the PREAL manual if employed as part of an interrogation program.

"This is the guidebook to getting false confessions, a system drawn specifically from the communist interrogation model that was used to generate propaganda rather than intelligence," Kleinman said in an interview. "If your goal is to obtain useful and reliable information this is not the source book you should be using."

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, let me wrap my head around this: US agencies signed off on torture methods in order to gain false confessions which were of absolutely no use to them in discerning where clear and present danger existed, to create confessions to adhere to a pre-determined outcome?!?

The reason many of our prisoners of war( forgive me, the terminology almost slipped my mind; "enemy combatants", currently warehoused at Guantanamo without due process)will never be released is that water-boarding wasn't the worst thing done to them in order to extract these false confessions.

Memo shows US official disagreed with Bush administration's view on torture

A memo about harsh interrogation techniques shows that a former US state department official strongly dissented from the Bush administration's secret legal view in 2005 that an international treaty against torture did not apply to CIA interrogations in foreign countries.

Until now, the February 2006 analysis by Philip Zelikow has been a high-level, classified internal critique of the Bush administration's controversial interrogation policies. At the time he wrote his criticism, Zelikow was secretary of state Condoleezza Rice's representative on terrorism issues to the national security council's deputies committee.

An Objective Comparison of the U.S. to Regimes that Everyone Labels Repressive

Americans often proclaim our nation as a symbol of freedom to the world while dismissing nations such as Cuba and China as categorically unfree. Yet, objectively, we may be only half right. Those countries do lack basic individual rights such as due process, placing them outside any reasonable definition of “free,” but the United States now has much more in common with such regimes than anyone may like to admit.

These countries also have constitutions that purport to guarantee freedoms and rights. But their governments have broad discretion in denying those rights and few real avenues for challenges by citizens — precisely the problem with the new laws in this country.

The list of powers acquired by the U.S. government since 9/11 puts us in rather troubling company.

FLASHBACK - Most Members of Congress Remain Committed to Israel’s Blockade of Gaza

Administration officials and Washington lawmakers indicated the United States is not willing to urge Israel to lift its blockade of Gaza, even as activists seek to highlight the issue after civilian deaths during Israel’s interception of a Gaza-bound flotilla.

Webmaster's Commentary:

With the recent release of the United Nations Human Rights Council report condemning the brutal Israeli attack on the flotilla and declaring the blockade of Gaza a violation of international law, every single member of the United States Government who supports that blockade is an accessory after-the-fact in a violation of international law. How much longer will we live in a nation run by criminals willing to subvert the laws for Israel's gains?

Back in 1948 and 1949, the USSR imposed a blockade on West Berlin to starve that nation into abandoning their elected leaders and accepting Soviet rule. This is identical to the situation in Gaza where Israel is trying to starve the Palestinians into abandoning their elected leaders and accepting Israeli rule.

But back in 19648, we had a far more moral and principled government that had the spine to stand up for what is right, and the US and its allies launched the Berlin Airlift, flying 200,000 flights into Berlin, delivering 13,000 tons of goods per day for a year until the blockade collapsed.

Oh to have real leaders like that again!

So they pick up a gun, or a brick, or a stone

And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons

And there is blood on the wire..."
